Zohran Mamdani confirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm this decision immediately after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the imperative to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, it will always live within me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
