Authorities stated they were unable to remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage captured a individual putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the judge she was ill, according to media sources, with the judge recommending her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December.

Sculpture after eye removal
The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the stickers could not be detached without harming the art piece.

“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

The mayor said the local government would pursue the “substantial” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; £68,000), the artwork represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.

Cast in Blue is its official name but residents called the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
