UK Administration Pulls Major Loan for Mozambican Gas Initiative Due to Climate and Security Fears
The British administration has canceled a contentious $1.15 billion loan backing a massive liquefied natural gas development in the African nation of Mozambique, citing growing accusations that the venture contributes to the global warming and insurgent unrest in the region.
Official Decision and Rationale
Business Secretary the Business Secretary stated that the UK would end its financial support for the Mozambique LNG project, marking five years after the deal provoked fierce backlash from campaigners over its effects on human rights, safety, and the planet.
“While these decisions are never easy, the government believes that UK support of this project will not serve the needs of our country,” said the minister.
The move emerged as the project's developer, France-based energy giant TotalEnergies, plans to revive the problem-plagued initiative, which has been suspended since a devastating Islamist insurgency on a local town in 2021 caused over 800 of casualties.
Background and Growing Concerns
The financing deal was originally sanctioned in 2020. The government explained they had evaluated the risks associated with the project and concluded they had grown substantially since that time.
At first, the UK's export credit agency had claimed the scheme would sustain thousands of UK jobs and could be “pivotal for Mozambique's economic and societal progress.”
However, environmental organisations have consistently contended that the east African nation should be supported to invest more heavily in sustainable sources to establish a viable green economy.
Opposition and Appeals for Wider Action
The initiative became a focal point for insurgency in the area and was also alleged of infringing upon the rights of local communities who were relocated when construction activities began.
“It has been blatantly clear for years that this scheme is a disaster for local communities and for the climate,” said one activist from a ethical investment organisation. He called on major financial institutions funding the venture to pull their backing, arguing they “can no longer ignore the problems.”
Another leading climate advocate added: “This Mozambique gas project is a massive carbon timebomb, linked to serious violations. It should never have been given UK public backing in the first place.”
He further urged that the UK should instead assist countries like Mozambique by helping them to become resilient to the impacts of the climate crisis and invest in their plentiful clean energy resources.
The French energy company has been approached for comment.
