The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and challenged its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Shows Zero Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is clear of any level of drought. This change came after multiple heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Until late December, areas like Modoc County were still classified as unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions should not be confused with being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the rest of the year.
