The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
