Southern California Experiences Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just One Week After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that led to inundation across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unseasonably high weather for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Heat
On Friday midday, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, according to meteorologists. This easily surpasses the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on forecast graphics for the region.
Safety Advisories
Authorities stated that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice featured:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat follows closely after a massive storm system that struck the state last week. That system unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, leading to flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also triggered a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions will arrive. Readings were forecast to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Additional areas that hit 90°F included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to see the high eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can expect weather in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the start of March.
