Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
