New research indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
