Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's time in office as governor ends in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any choice is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

He has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and championing a ballot measure that would increase the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to withhold government money from California and threatened eliminating the state's ability to grant trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," Duffy stated, following a recent tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized trucker that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

His administration noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier announced he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a last month's release countering Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's survey showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of previous highs to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The thought that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
