Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump supported a truce plan supported by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the current front line.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would merely represent a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
